Our first
week in Arizona was spent in beautiful Sedona. We hiked every day and experienced some magnificent
scenery. Here is a sample of our
hikes this week.
On Tuesday Feb 14 we hiked for about 3 hours to see Devil’s Bridge.

The picture below is a rock formation
with crossbeds on our way down from the bridge.
On Wednesday
Feb 15 it was a bit rainy so we went up to Flagstaff to do a bit of shopping
and we went for lunch at Brady’s, one of the restaurants featured on Diners,
Drive-ins and Dives. When we got
back to Sedona the weather had cleared so we walked up part of the Schnebly
Hill Jeep Trail.
This is one
of the views on that trail.

On Thursday
Feb 16 we hiked for about 4 hours up and down Fay Canyon. There is a natural arch about half way
up the official trail.
We continued
past the end of the official trail on a ‘social trail’ and saw stunning views
back out the canyon and many more isolated rock formations.
We celebrated our efforts by going out to Elote Café for
dinner. This restaurant always has
a line up waiting for tables and usually the wait is about an hour. We were fortunate to wait only about 10
minutes.
On Friday Feb 17 we hiked in the area with views of
Cathedral rock, pictured behind us.
Then we took a drive up to Jerome, across the Verde valley
from Sedona, where we had lunch and looked in the shops. When we got back to Carol’s house we
found a family of collared peccaries, locally known as javelinas, in the
driveway. We had to chase them off before we let the dogs out of the car, as
the javelinas can be quite dangerous if they are cornered.
On Saturday, Feb 19 we hiked the trail around Courthouse
Rock and Bell Rock. This is Muffin
Rock, which was about half way around the loop.
Muffin Rock doesn’t look so large in that picture, so in the
picture below you can see Evanna, who climbed to the top to give a sense of
scale.
